While the movement of goods has been part and parcel of commerce for much of history, the advent of new technologies, the intensification of global competition, and the rise of more discriminating consumer demand have put more pressure on the supply chain. In most instances, the warehousing function being closer to the customer absorbed the pressure of managing the supply and demand gap.
